Prejudice and hatred again divided and took lives in the Vietnam War. The United States put soldiers in South Vietnam to help support their democratic government, to show their disapproval of North Vietnam’s communist government. As reported by History.com and adapted by Newsela, “The war began in 1954, after the rise to power of Ho Chi Minh and his communist Viet Minh party in North Vietnam.” (adapted by Newsela Staff). At this time, the United States was involved in the Cold War with communist countries like the Soviet Union and China. And in 1954, France and the Viet Minh signed a treaty that stated that “The northern part of Vietnam was (to be) named the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, while the southern part was (to be) known as the Republic of Vietnam. And in 1955, the strongly anti-communist Ngo Dinh Diem pushed Bao (the leader of South Vietnam at the time) aside to become president of South Vietnam.” (adapted(Adapted by Newsela Staff). This treaty literally divided the entire country of Vietnam into two parts; Communist North Vietnam, and Anti-communist South Vietnam. The people in the south hated their government and a communist uprising occurred.
