Perhaps, Dorothy, the main character, is going through a path that is not as easy as adults would want for a child her age to be. Even though it is a book full of adventures and looks out for children to be hooked to the story, there are times when they explore concepts that are quite serious and more complex such as discouragement, risks, violence, various life and death obstacles, and much more. But that doesn’t mean that a child shouldn’t read the parts of the book that are less simple or that those are solely meant for adults, because in The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz, every little scene is made vextremely easy to understand and interpreted in a simple way. Dorothy, as the female heroine of the book, permits any child to relate to her and stick to the book at all times. Her personality can be shared with many children, but adults can’t share that. They don’t have the same aspects that construct a child, especially in this text with traits such as innocence and power without even knowbeing aware that Dorothy has some kind of power. When Dorothy’s house has been carried away by a cyclone, killing the Wicked Witch Of the East, the little girl had no personal doingvolvement in this matter, but in the end, was considered powerful by the Witch of The North and the Munchkins, while being completely innocent herself. Dorothy gets the credit for it without even acknowledging it or wanting to accept that type of power and responsibility, “ You are very kind, but there must be some mistake. I have not killed anything.”
“Your house did, anyway,” replied the little old woman with a laugh; “and that i
ts the same thing. See!” (Baum 11-12).
As described in the book, Dorothy is a harmless, innocent little girl just as many of the children are. Their innocence is mostly subjective, but it is still innocence, a concept at which adults cannot trealuly relate to in the same way. Furthermore, a similar situation happenoccurs later on in the book when Dorothy again “kills” the Wicked Witch of the West, this time not knowrealizing that a simple bucket of water would make her melt. Even though she killed the witch, in a way it still makes her look innocent, because she dihadn’t knowt idea about the facts before docarrying out the act. It can be compared to a child twhato is doing something wrong but has no idea that it is wrong or does it by accident. Any child reading this marvelous book can relate to Dorothy. That is why kchildsren can relate so much to the little girl and not adults, making the children the winning audience for the book. Adults can control their innocence and their power, but children can only control it to an extent or not at all.
