It is apprnoprimatel whenfor mothers and daughters to have different interests in leisure and recreation, because they belong to different generations. I think that Bliss is happier than her mother because she belongings to a younger generation with a different view about gender role, which means that Bliss does what she likes, even though her parents want her to do something else. Also, Bliss is happier because she has support from friends and finds a place where she fits in for her passion. In contrast, with different beliefs influenced by traditional culture, Bliss’s mother has done for herself and wants her daughter to do what she thinks goapprodpriate for a woman based on the society's expectations. She may have something she loves to do but she has to stop it in order to be in compliancey with the societal viewstandards.
Even though Bliss and her mother disagree about their choices, they still have many things in common. I can see th
at they have very similar personalityies that isare strong, indeterminded, and caring. AFor her speech, Bliss wrote for her speech:tThe person I admire most is my mother because she is a fighter who never gives up on what she believes in and never gives up on me., sShe knows that she has what her mother has, twhichat is the will to stand up for what they believe in. They also love and are proud of each other, even though they do not speaky it out loud.
Bliss’s mother, a traditional and strong woman, wants Bliss to
jcompete in the beauty pageants because she knows her daughter has potential to be the winner because of her beauty and talent. She wants Bliss to be a woman who is different from the other girls ion the roller derby teams, who will be successful with school, work, and marriage that a typical woman should have to fit into this society. In opposition to her mother’s view, Bliss thinks that her mother uses the old, traditional idea of 1950s womanhood on her that is so old and so traditional for a young girl. She rebels against her mother’s will by screwing up the pageant with her blue hair, and hides from her parents to join the roller derby team. However, Bliss realizes that her mother is not just a tough woman whom she always sees everyday, but also that she is the one she can turn to, and twhe one gives her invaluable support when she has problem in life.
