Shell Eco Marathon is a competition that emphasizes maximum efficiency whereby students build fuel efficient cars and are judged by the maximum travelling distance withon only one litre of fuel. Cars are driven at a set speed around a circuit with a fixed number of laps. On the 18th of August, a team from the Monash University Sunway campus dropped by to meet the Taylor’s Racing Team for some guidance and advice on chassis design. As the car is raced at top speeds, rigid yet ergonomically designed chassis are among the important criteria to be considered in the design stage. Hence, the Monash team aimed to use the Formula Society of Automotive Engineers (FSAE) rules in their design stage. The discussion was a fruitful one, further strengthening the bond between neighbouring universities.
SOE graduating student, Chiah Thong Ling has emerged as the first runner-up in this morning’s inter-varsity IEM Electrical Engineering Final Year Project Poster Competition 2016 at Wisma IEM. His score was actually tied with another participant and during the tiebreaker, which required both of them to pitch their project in 2 minutes,. hHe emerged victorious. For being the first-runner up, he won RM750.
Another student, Heng Jing Lei has bagged the consolation prize worth RM200.
Dr Siow Chun Lim was the chair of the organising committee and this is the first time such a competition was held under IEM Electrical Engineering Technical Division and he felt proud of our students.
In total, 7seven universities participated and each sent two of their best students to compete.
So, kudos to their respective FYP supervisors, namely Dr Hoo Choon Lih, Steven (Chiah Thong Ling’s supervisor) and Dr Aravind (Heng Jing Lei’s supervisor) for preparing them for the competition which is actually pitching the best against the best from each participating university.
Thank you to the SOE EE team of colleagues for developing and nurturing of these 2two students over the past 4four years.
