1. Provide an example from your own experience where Gestalt psychology and the lLaw of Pragnanz helped in an organizational decision making.
In my previous role as an Assistant Manager for a retail store, I was assigned to develop a plan to increase sales for a period of time. To achieve this goal, I decided to have all department managers involved. At our initial meeting, we set a goal to increase sales from 4 % to 12% for a six-month period, also at the meeting we brainstormed ideas of how to achieve this goal, and one of the ideas we came up with was, department managers have to select non promotional items (which compliments the promotional item) weekly to tie in with the promotional items. For example, merchandising promotional item like toilet rolls with non promotional item like hand soap. After studying the Gestalt psychology and the lLaw of pPragnanz, I realize how the law of proximity was used in increasing sales for our store from 4% to 19% over a six-month period. By the law of proximity, as customers set out to buy toilet rolls and see the hand soap, their minds linked together and encouraged them to buy both.
2. Provide an example from your experience where Gestalt psychology and the lLaw of pPragnanz made problem solving more difficult.
As an Assistant Manager, I was presented to help improve our service score which was very poor to a better score. I interpreted this problem with a simple solution of continually talking to our staff at morning and afternoon meetings, how we can all contribute to serving our customers better and in return help improve our service score. This simplest approach failed.
I later reconstructed a different way to solve this problem which was hilarious. I brought in a wooden carved to work and at a meeting, I told them that which department doesn’t offer the best service to our customers will have the “pig” in their department, and when the dDistrict mManager visits the store looking for the wooden pig, then we know he’s looking for the department which is not delivering the best service. This actually helped improve our service to our customers and our service score.
