The Confederation held mostly in favor of the rights of the States, because of how the federal Ggovernment was set up at the time; Washington managed to mostly military and Fforeign Aaffairs, while the rest of the decisions were at the Sstate level establishment. The South perceived that the Government would push for legislation at the national level in their policies and their respective order of the day for the abolition of slavery,; they have made their discomfort clear when South Carolina withdrew from the Union and the jurisdiction of the Government of the United States, followed by several other States. However, despite the Republican majority in the North, and their vehement views and, firm on the subject, Abraham Lincoln was not sufficiently radical.
