Hurricane Ike and it's’ path through Houston
The day before Hurricane Ike hit the city of Houston, was like any other day. I was not worried, nor did I take the incoming news about the weather seriously. Why? Because we had experienced hurricanes in times gone by with little or no damage. However, people were going crazy about Ike. My mother ran to the nearest super market, and bought many food supplies. The supermarket lines were extremely long,; some nearly reaching the store’s back door.
The past hurricanes, which apparently did not took placrrive intensely, like the weather forecast people predicted, did not startled me a single bit. tThat is why I was careless about this situation. When we came back from the store, we had a family reunion. We discussed on how to prepare ourselves in case of an emergency. That same night, after dinner, I went to my room, and starred at my window,; the sky looked pale, and sad. I went to sleep, thinking that the next day everything was going to be back to normal, but things turned out to be the opposite.
The next hours, around three am in the morning of September 13thirteen of 2008, hHurricane Ike was making it's’ path through Houston. The sound of branches hitting my window woke me up. My mother came in to my room looking for me, since the power went offut. She took my sister and me to the attic, where our other relatives were hiding. We stayed there for about four hours, until the rain stopped a little,. mMeanwhile, I was regretting the fact I did not tooake things in a serious way. Now I was stuck in my attic, and the smell of rotten rust made me sick,; it felt like the longest four hours of my life.
When the water level went down enough for us to climb down, what our eyes saw was a completely disaster. The little gas station that was around the corner from my house had been blown apart. We walked through the mud,. I was disgusted on thoe way that the water kept of entering my boots, but it was the only way to find water to drink, and food to eat, since we had run out of supplies. We saw people getting food from The National Guard,. tThey gave us a pack of water, bread, and other supplies.
The next few days, were like “waking up from a nightmare”. I saw pictures of boats on the freeway. The worset parhit was Galveston, TX, the coastal city that looked like an abandoned town. Hurricane Ike had destroyed homes, communities, and even animal shelters. I saw a bird searching for his family, just like us humans, oin our search of a new living situation. Hurricane Ike killed one hundred ninety -five people,; sixteen where from Houston. Now, on it's’ eig8tht anniversary, we remember those people who lost their lives, due to Mother Nature.
