While assigned to my last unit, my duty position was that of first sergeant. In a field artillery Bbattalion, there are four Bbatteries, and a logistics company. Each of the five have a commander and a first sergeant. The battalion is comprised of a commander, command sergeant major, and executive officer. These personnel at each of their respective units are known as command teams. The duties of the command teams in this unit includes the following:
Planning and executing airborne operations
Conducting annually required training
Conducting training on military occupational skills
Participation in certification evaluations
Planning and participation in multinational combat training exercises
Maintenance and management of personnel’s military records, health records, and finances
Bottom up refinement and input into the Battalion tTraining pPlan
Coordination for logistics and adjacent unit support
It is a unit with a lot of energy and an extremely fast paced work environment. For the successful operation of units like this, there is a basic need for open communication.
While in the position of first sergeant, I noticed many barriers to communication. These barriers effectively shut down the lines of communication between the battery and battalion leadership.
