Iago is able to manipulate others to do things that benefitsbenefit him using words and actions. In fact, as the play starts, Iago is taking advantage of betraying Othello’s trust. Iago is in control of Roderigo’s money, so Roderigo does what Iago says. In the text Roderigo remarks, "That thou, Iago, who hast had my purse as if the strings were thine" ( 1,1,2). This proves IagoIago's hold keep ofon Roderigo’s money. Iago is not only very smart, but he also knows how to plan things. He knows Roderigo is in love with Desdemona and figures that he would do anything to have her. So he gets Roderigo to go with him to tell Brabantio about Desdemona and Othello, but he soon leaves so Brabantio doesn’t know he was there also. The text reads, “Farewell; for I must leave you: It seems not meet, nor wholesome to my place, To be produced—as, if I stay, I shall— Against the Moor: for, I do know, the state…” ( 1,1,158-161). This proves that he set up Roderigo so that Othello thinks only Roderigo told, but he also told, proving that he manipulates people easily.
