Evelyne is a 55-year old55-year-old addict who began drinking when she was only a teenager. After that, she began taking drugs: amphetamines, cocaine, and heroin. Drugs gave Evelyne protection and warmth and gave her the possibility to cope better with people around her. The heroin program in Bern, Switzerland, helped her to get through this and they are the only reason why she is still alive. She was one of the first addicts to join this program in Bern and she had been in that program for 20 years. She takes less than half a gram of pure heroin every day, twice a day, under the supervision of doctors who take care of her. Through this program she has rebuilt her life and now she is okay. She can support herself financially and has a good relationship with her family, which has been lost through all these years as an addict. Without this program, she would be dead by now.
