In the novel Crabbe, by William Bell, the author builds up suspense and terror to add toenhance the scene. This isoccurs when Crabbe approaches his first misleading event, the bear attack. Bell continuously uses juxtaposition, simile, and fragmented sentence structure to increase the suspense throughout the scene. To begin, the bear is to be described as rhythmical and threatening at the same time. This shows how the suspense is eating Crabbe alive as well, and givesproviding a distorted view of the situation. Bell added this to increase dramatic effect and mislead the readersreader. Furthermore, Crabbe can't even identify this “mysterious animal”animal.” Bell added two similes to deepen the effect of the “mystery“mysterious animal,” soproviding readers can havewith an ideal picture of what Crabbe is facing. This leadsand leading to a sense of suspense. In addition, Bell demonstrates suspense by misrepresenting the structure byand using fragmented sentence structure. He uses sentence structure to reduce the pace of the scene. Bell’s usage of structure portrays the passage to quicken and opensopen the readerreader's eyes in preparation for futurethe events ahead. In conclusion, all things considered, Bell depends on juxtaposition, simile, and sentence structure to overallfurther deepen the suspense furthermoreoverall suspense.
