Many cultural sites in Jordan are facing the threat of destruction, abandonment, neglect, and inappropriate reuse due to many reasons, most importantly, the lack of local and governmental recognition of their significance and limited preservation and protection policies or management plans.
The purpose of this mixed research study is to explore the role of established policies and management plans in shaping recognized cultural landscape sites in urban areas of Jordan. An explanatory sequential
mixed methodsmixed-methods design will be used and will begin with collecting qualitative data, followed by quantitative data. In the first stage, a mix of interviews, observations, and document data, including existing governmental and non-governmental policies and management plans for cultural landscape sites in urban areas, will be collected. The second stage utilizes quantitative data from a survey that aims to identify the perception of Amman’s residents on four cultural landscape sites; thattheir perception will be derived from the qualitative findings. This phase will try to test ifwhether the resident'sresidents’ perception corresponds with Jordan’s policies ofregarding these sites. The tentative plan is to explore the role of policies, management plans, and human perception in reshaping the cultural landscape sites.
This
researchstudy will answer the following research questionsquestion: What are the main factors that have contributed to the development and shaping of the cultural sites in Jordan.Jordan? The first phase of the study sought an explanation to 1)(1) what current policies in Jordan are tackling the issue of recognition and preservation of the cultural landscape Sites, 2) How dosites and (2) how the current policies impact the recognition of cultural landscape sites and unrecognized ones?ones. The second phase will try to answer the following question, does: Does human perception coincide with the current policies on the preservation of cultural landscape sites in Amman and their roles?
The findings of this research will aid in the development of guidelines and databases for decision-makers, planners, landscape architects, and the community for unrecognized cultural landscape sites.
