Many people may think they can handle texting and driving, therefore multitask, they do not realize that their perceptions of their multitasking abilities are completely wrong. Chapter fourFour states that “Humans are highly sensitive to abrupt, unexpected changes in the environment (Hudson & Whisenhunt, 2019, p. 125)”. Although drivers are not holding their cell phone, it does not change the fact that their attention has completely shifted from the road and are now distracted by simple notificationnotifications or texttexts. Concepts like selective attention explain perfectly that “we can only focus our attention on a small portion at one time.” Another explanation for this behavior is inattentional blindness, which is known as “looking not seeing”. It explains that a person can “ignore some stimuli while paying attention to others.” All in all, texting, messaging, or even shifting your focus from the road can lead to a big accident and the potential risk of hurting someone or yourself.
