As a protagonist works through their ‘Hero’s Journey’, maturing along the way, theretheir courage grows significantly. When a character embarks on a quest, they often lack qualities of a hero, including courage. However, as a hero works through their quest, this quality often becomes evident in their personality and actions. This is displayed in the film, ‘Finding Nemo’. At the start, the protagonist, Marlin, is terrified of the ocean, wanting nothing to do with it and protecting his son in a paranoid way from the terrors of the Oceanocean. Despite this, when he embarks on his journey to save his son, he has to swim the whole way down the coast to Sydney, fighting sharks and swimming through jelly fish. When Gil talks to Nemo about rumours of his Dad fighting sharks, Nemo replies with ‘Sharks‘Sharks?! That can’t be him!’ This shows Nemo doubts his Dad’sdad’s courage and does not think Marlin will come help him, even though he is Nemo’s Daddad. However, after Nemo is showshown that it is really his Daddad, he exclaims ‘It is my Dad!dad! My Daddad took on a shark!’
